Composing has much in common with composting (photo).
About the only difference between them is a single alphabet letter.
Both require a time to mature.
Both require the right tools.
Both nurture and enrich the environment, helping the living world and civilization itself to grow, develop, and prosper.
Both are the product of human hands.
Both have power and purpose.
More importantly, both can be taught -- just like improvisation.
When we're composing it's like we're improvising -- only in very, very slow motion - same as a sprout grows, hour by hour, cell by cell.
